Evan looked out the window, thinking he saw the men out there moving around. It could have been that they were breaking up and trying to enter through different entrance points. Porter and Lewandowski were still talking, though Evan couldn’t understand much of it.

“I think we got movement,” Evan said.

Porter looked out the window, then back at Lewandowski. “Is there someplace you can hide?”

“I don’t know. Maybe the hall closet?”

“Good. Go there. I’ll get you when it’s safe.”

As Lewandowski left, Porter took another peek out the window. “Still just the three?”

“As far as I can tell,” Evan answered.

“One will come in the front. Another will come in the back. And the third will probably come in through an upstairs window.”

Evan glanced at her, wondering how she figured that. She sounded so sure and confident. Porter looked back at him.

“There’s a back door on the side that leads to the kitchen. Upon driving in, I saw a piece of lattice or something that could be used to climb to the upstairs window. That only leaves the front door for the third guy.”

Evan grinned. “I love how your mind works.”

“If you want me to take it a step further, I’m assuming the guy upstairs will come in first. The guys at the front and back doors will try to time their entrance to come in at the same time. The guy upstairs will try to come in before that, that way all three can converge on us at the same time and try to overwhelm and surprise us.”

“One of us should be upstairs to meet him.”

“Should be you,” Porter said.

Evan looked down at her side. “You think?”

Porter shifted in her stance, her elbow barely touching her side, clearly looking uncomfortable. “I’m not sure climbing stairs is a good idea for me right now.”

“But that might leave you with two down here.”

“I can manage.”

“Cari… you don’t need to play the hero. Not with me.”

“I’m not playing hero. I’m just trying to play it smart. And right now, this is the smart move. We also don’t have time to argue about it.”

Evan sighed. Even though he still thought he should’ve stayed on the first floor, he wasn’t going to argue and fight about it. She was right about one thing: there wasn’t time for that.

“Fine. Good luck.”

Evan ran over to the stairs and hurried up there. Once he disappeared from Porter’s view, she looked around the room, trying to figure out the best place to wait. She first tried to see if there was a spot that could see both the front and back doors at the same time. There wasn’t. Then she took a look around to see where the best place to give herself some cover would be.

She had thoughts about playing dead, and just dropping to the floor, right there in the middle of the room. Then when the two men came in, she could blast both of them. She thought that might be a little risky, though. Especially in the condition she was currently in.
